"My Incredibly Cute Baby" contest

Congratulations to all our baby winners!

Imagine rounding up every mom, dad, grandparent, great grandparent, crazed auntie, proud Godfather and smug sibling in Orange County, seating them all at a huge picnic bench – and having them show off baby pictures.

That's pretty much what happened in the Register's "My Incredibly Cute Baby" contest at ocregister.com/life.

The contest did what only the greatest news stories do – it brought a community a bit closer together. It's our theory that it's harder to be cranky with somebody after you've seen pictures of their kid in diapers. (Go ahead, just try to raise an impolite finger at a driver who might be related to the little drooler you saw on page 68 of the "My Incredibly Cute Baby" contest… What? Still not so hard? Oh well, we tried.)

What we know, for sure, is that a lot of people played; 2,260 babies were entered.

A few contest notes:

We checked, diligently and frequently, to track allegations of computerized voting, a practice specifically banned by this game. We didn't find any.

The team that pushed Joe Bullock (click here to read about Joe) to more than 128,104 votes said it was an all-human affair, with pods of Bullock voters in several states and northern California. They received regular (some, not us, might use the word "obsessive") email updates about Bullock's vote status from step-Grandpa Brad McCall of San Juan Capistrano.

"It was just a lot of fun for a lot of people," McCall said.

Others had less fun. Specifically, people who found out about the contest late – or others who were frustrated by what they felt was a lack of oversight.

Here's the deal: Going forward, we'll slightly change the way the game is played by offering two ways to win – popular vote and judging and/or random drawings. This means anybody who plays – not just those with time to cast votes all day and night – will have a chance to win. It also means if you find out about the contest late in the process, you won't be shut out by insurmountable vote totals of those who knew about it earlier.

Either way we hope you come back and have fun again.

We'll launch two new contests by mid-July.
